Program
For the Public
Activities and Displays
- Open 10am to 4pm daily.
- Train rides on both the raised and ground level tracks.

- Boat rides on the paddle steamer 'Navy Lark'.
- 'OO' and 'N' gauge railways operating in the clubhouse.

For registered participants
Tuesday 5th January
- Marquee erected.
- 1pm to 6:00pm - facilities open for unloading, checking boiler certificates, etc.
- 5pm - Safety briefing (first batch).
Wednesday 6th January
- 8:30am - Registration opens (clubhouse upstairs meeting room).
- 9:00am - Safety briefing (second batch).
- 10:00am to 4:00pm - Public running.
- 1:00pm - Official Opening and Grand Parade.
- 6:00pm - Dinner.
- 7:30pm until dark - Shunting competition.
Thursday 7th January
- 10:00am to 4:00pm - Public running.
- 2:00pm - MEANZ meeting in clubhouse upstairs meeting room.
- 6:00pm - Dinner.
- 7:30pm - Les Moore Challenge.
Friday 8th January
- 10:00am to 4:00pm - Public running.
- 2:00pm - Safety auditors meeting in clubhouse upstairs meeting room.
- 6:00pm - Dinner.
- 7:30pm - Night run.
Saturday 9th January
- 10:00am to 4:00pm - Public running.
- 2:00pm - Address by Les Irwin on the new stainless steel boiler code.
- 6:30pm - Formal Convention Dinner.
- 9:00pm - Guest speaker, prize giving.
Sunday 10th January
- 10:00am to 4:00 pm - Public running
- 6:00pm - Dinner.
- 7:30pm - Convention closes
Daytime Food
- Morning and afternoon teas will be available for registrants in the marquee throughout the convention.
- There are a number of take away food outlets, a café, a dairy and a bakery within walking distance for lunches.
Engineering facilities
- There is a raised track of 524m with 7 ¼", 5", 3 ½" & 2 ½" gauges. It incorporates a tunnel and a bridge.
- There is a ground level track of 920m, 7 ¼" gauge only. It incorporates two tunnels and two bridges.
- There is a boating pond of 8000 square metres, 300 - 400mm deep. The club paddle boat will be taking rides. It can also be used for radio control model boats.
- No model aircraft can be flown as we are under the airport flight path.
- There are grass areas available for traction engines and road vehicle models.
- There is a 12m loop track in Gauge One for the Les Moore Challenge. This can be used at any time through the convention.
- Steaming bays have compressed air and water available. There are some steaming bays for 7 ¼" gauge, also separate steaming bays for the smaller gauges.
- 230V outlets are available for charging electric locos. There are some extension leads available but bring your own to be sure.
- Petrol, kerosene, charcoal, coal, Australian char and steam oil are available.
- There will be overnight security for the site including the marquee and any locos we cannot fit inside.

- Saturday Morning Market in Montgomerie Square.

After Convention Sightseeing possibilities

- Abel Tasman National Park - boat trips along the coastline, walking tracks, etc.
- Nelson Lakes National Park - walking tracks, lakes, mountain scenery.
- Marlborough Sounds, spanning from French Pass to Havelock.
- Marlborough district wineries.
- Drive through high country Molesworth Station and come out at Hanmer Springs. This is a full day drive from Nelson over gravel roads.
Golden Bay
- Limestone caves on Takaka hill road.
- Cobb valley and hydro power station.
- Waikoropupu springs - large spring of exceptionally clear artesian water.
- Small hydro electric station using old gold washing race.
- Salmon farm.
- Beaches, scenery, etc.
West Coast
Nelson is an ideal place to start a trip down the West Coast. It offers numerous sightseeing possibilities. Gold and coal mining relics, pancake rocks between Westport and Greymouth, wild open beaches, greenstone shops in Hokitika, Okarito bird sanctuary and a road that can ultimately take you to Queenstown and Otago. If it is fine there are splendid views of the Southern Alps, but remember this is the highest rainfall area of the country.

Security and Insurance
Nelson Society of Modellers takes no insurance liability for any items you bring to the convention. You should have all personal items insured under your personal insurance policies.
We do not expect to be able to house all visiting locos in secure storage overnight. We will be providing overnight security of the site, particularly in the vicinity of the steaming bays and marquee.
